Papin, Denis

(1647-1714)
   inventor
Born in Chitenay, near Blois, Denis Papin was the first to discover the elastic power of water vapor and spent the rest of his life inventing and perfecting various machines that employed that power. Forced into exile after the revocation of the edict of nantes, Papin produced his "kettle" with a safety valve. it was the basis for later inventions and discoveries. Leaving England to live in Kas-sel, Germany, he developed the idea of a piston engine (1687). This early model was used for pumping water, used cylinders and pistons, and was powered by air pressure. He also invented a waterwheel (1700) that powered a pneumatic transmission. Forgotten, Papin's inventions were never further developed, and he died in poverty in London.
